Barry Shears Book Launch

Join us for a the launch of “Play it like you sing it”: The Shears Collection of Bagpipe Culture and Dance Music from Nova Scotia, Volumes 1&2.

This two volume work represents over 35 years of research into the highland piping traditions of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton and the Codroy Valley, Newfoundland. The work examines the community musician, associated folklore and genealogy, the instruments used and the music played.  Volume one contains information on many of the pipers and piping families who maintained a tradition of bagpipe music in Nova Scotia with a section on immigrant and locally made bagpipes. Volume two contains 250 tunes, arranged by area where the music was collected. Since many pipers also played the fiddle a selection of violin music is also included.The work contains over a hundred photographs of pipers, both men and women, many appearing in print for the first time and numerous examples of  puirt-a-beul or mouth music associated with the melodies in the music section.

The launch takes place in the Tuning Room. Admission by donation. 3 pm.
