To honour the founding of our country, admission to visit the Highland Village on July 1 will be free. Come to Iona and celebrate Canada’s birthday.

The Highland Village céilidh, or house visit, features the convivial social and cultural expressions of the Gaels. Join us for songs, stories and music, or just a chance to chat about the traditions and history of Nova Scotia’s Gaelic-speaking people.

Wednesday, July 2 - Làithean Sona/Happy Days Childrens Living History Program 
Take part in this special living history program for children and get a sense of what life was like for Gaels in those days past. The program features special hands-on activities including chores, crafts, games, language, and song. Costumes are provided. For ages 8-12 only. 10 am to 4 pm. $45 per child. Prepaid reservations required. No refunds or discounts. HST exempt.

Fresh webs of wool taken from the loom and awaiting tailoring as blankets and clothing required pre-shrinking. The Gaels way to make the cloth ready for home use was to wet it, beat it and make a time of it while communally singing choral songs in rhythm during the milling frolic. Come and join us at the table for songs and friendly conversation at the Highland Village milling frolic.

Sunday, July 27 - Anniversary Church Service - Malagawatch Church

The River & Lakeside Pastoral Charge of the United Church of Canada hosts their annual Anniversary Church Service in the Malagawatch Church at 3 pm. Free admission to service. Voluntary collection taken up by the Pastoral Charge.

Wednesday, July 30 - Best of Boxwood Tour with Chris Norman - Malagawatch Church

The ‘Best of Boxwood’ Musique Royale tour is a traditional Maritime ensemble. Programs combine originality, intelligence, fun, and sheer mastery that have garnered respect from audiences, presenters, and colleagues alike in North America, Europe and Asia. The music brings to life the energetic traditional dance music of Maritime Canada, Scotland, & Ireland. This year’s performers include, Chris Norman and guests. Tickets prices: $20.00 for the general public and $10.00 for students. 7:30pm.

Thursday, July 31 - Donald Og Day

On board a British man of war patrolling the Bras d’Or Lake following the 1758 Seige of Louisbourg, Domhnall Og MacNeil brought news of the lake’s natural wonders home to his native Isle of Barra. Join us as we commemorate the Donald Og legend and the early days of Cape Breton’s European history. Met with a direct descendant of Donald Og, Rod C. MacNeil, who will share the story of Donald Og as he settled in Cape Breton. Traditional food, natural dye, barvas ware and other demonstrations will take place throughout the day, along with a special running of Cash’s Carding Mill.  A céilidh will be held. 10:00am – 3:00pm. Regular admission applies.
