Gaelic Cultural Animator (CSJ student position)

Reporting to the Visitor Experience Manager, the Gaelic Cultural Animator (in costume) provides accurate, informative, effective and entertaining interpretation of Nova Scotia’s Gaelic heritage and culture through first person (role playing) interpretation; demonstrates language, culture, crafts, and folklife; and participates in “living history,” cultural and interpretive programming. The Animator is also responsible for the care of objects and buildings assigned to them.
The Gaelic Cultural Animator is responsible for demonstrating Gaelic cultural traditions such as singing and storytelling through weekly interpretive events and special programming and may support Cleasaichean staff in their Gaelic programming.
The Gaelic Cultural Animator is responsible for the following typical duties (in accordance with the policies and plans of the Nova Scotia Highland Village Society and the policies of the Nova Scotia Museum:
- Greet visitors to their building in Gaelic and provide them with an introduction to the era and stories being interpreted, by way of first person (role play) and demonstrations
- Conduct demonstrations of Gaelic cultural expression through daily programming and special event including Gaelic conversations, ceilidhs, milling frolics and storytelling. Research and develop character personas and stories in consultation with the Cleasaichean and Manger of Visitor Engagement
- Assist individuals, through effective personal communication, to see and understand the story of the Gaelic speaking people who settled in this Province - their language, culture, folklife and material culture
- Participate in other first-person interpretive activities such as vignettes, skits, etc.
- Document and report visitor inquiries and interests
- Ensure the safety of the visitor by identifying and reporting potential risks as per reporting procedures
- Assist the delivery of special interpretive programs and events as scheduled
Salary Range & Benefits: $17.00/hour, 35 hours per week for 8 weeks. Applicants must be between 15 – 30 years of age, and eligible to work in Canada.
