History, culture & beauty waiting to be discovered
Pjila’si! Nestled along the Bras d’Or Lake in Cape Breton’s rolling heartland, where the highlands meet the lowlands along the shores of the island’s beautiful inland sea, there’s history, culture, and beauty waiting to be discovered. There is a tremendously vibrant cultural heart in this region, beating with the drums of the Gaels who settled the land of the Mi’kmaq who were here before.
Eskasoni First Nation is the largest Mi’kmaq community in the world. Deeply rooted within Eskasoni is the Mi’kmaq culture. We are proud to say that we are home to the largest Mi’kmaq speaking community with close ties to traditional culture and beliefs.
The community of Eskasoni has a proud history of supporting its young population with events that promote a healthy and active lifestyle among its four thousand community members. With a dedication to improving the lives of its future generation, the Eskasoni community strives to be culturally rich and respectful of its ecosystem based on concepts of shared responsibility.
Discover authentic Mi’kmaq culture along our picturesque 2.4 KM trail on Goat Island in Eskasoni. The island hugs the beautiful Bras d’Or Lake, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
You will be guided along the trail by one of our Mi’kmaq cultural interpreters who will take you to visit several villages, each one offering a unique experience to learn and partake in this way of life.
