Land Acknowledgement for Highland Village Museum, Iona, Nova Scotia
We acknowledge that Cape Breton Island, known in Mi'kmaw as Unama'ki, the Land of Fog, is situated on the traditional and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq people. This land has been, and continues to be, a sacred place for the Mi'kmaq, who have lived in harmony with its waters, forests, and landscapes since time immemorial.
As we gather here, we honour the Mi'kmaw people’s enduring relationship with this land, their stewardship, and their continued contributions to the cultural and spiritual life of the region.
We are privileged to work alongside our L'nu Advisory Group, whose wisdom and guidance enrich our understanding and strengthen our connections to this land and its people.
In the spirit of reconciliation, we commit ourselves to learning from Mi'kmaw knowledge and traditions while working together to build a future that respects, uplifts, and values the voices of the Mi'kmaq and all Indigenous communities.
Wela’lioq. Tapadh leibh. Thank you.
